On April 29, the Kyrgyz Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (KyrSEFF+), a program founded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union Investment Fund for Central Asia, organized a Spring conference in Osh city, entitled “How to create an effective business using green technologies?”. More than 150 people attended the event. They were representatives of businesses from Osh, Batken and Jalal-Abad oblasts, as well as various local and international organizations. Around 20 newspaper and TV representatives were also present.

The goal of the event was to inform entrepreneurs about modern technologies for resource and energy savings, and about the benefits of the financial mechanisms and incentives provided by the KyrSEFF+ program.

Energy savings is becoming increasingly important all over the world, including in the Kyrgyz Republic. Energy efficient and sustainable development in the housing and businesses sectors is a solution to various issues. In Kyrgyzstan, energy efficiency is particularly relevant as counter measure to electricity shortages, and could contribute to the improvement of the country’s social and economic situation.

Another concern in the Kyrgyz Republic is the conservation of natural water resources: climate change has been affecting the quality of drinking and irrigation water, especially in the southern regions of the country.

In the last 30 years, the volume of glaciers has decreased by 30-35%. This situation puts the country at risk, since glaciers are the main source of water supply for rivers.

An effective way to address this problem is to introduce water saving and water purifying systems in the agricultural, sector, commercial and residential sectors, using green technologies. The KyrSEFF+ program provides technical assistance and all the necessary funds – loans and grants – for such investments, thanks to the support of EBRD and EU IFCA.

Since April 2013, about 800 energy saving projects have been financed by KyrSEFF+, resulting in savings of over 111,000,000 kWh/year and a reduction in harmful emissions of more than 30,000 tons per year.
The program indicators achieved to date demonstrate the growing understanding and interest in modern technologies.

Each successfully implemented KyrSEFF+ project receives a grant provided by the European Union’s Investment Facility for Central Asia (IFCA).
“The EU Investment Facility for Central Asia provides grants, which are added to successfully implanted investment loans from European financial institutions like the EBRD. KyrSEFF+ is the first project in Kyrgyzstan financed in this way. The project is an excellent example of the harmonious use of various financial instruments to achieve economic and social development through energy conservation and the use of innovative green technologies”, said Johannes Stenbaek Madsen, Head of Cooperation Section of EU Delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic.
“Energy costs play an important role in the development of small and medium-sized businesses. Considering the annual growth of tariffs for energy carriers, entrepreneurs can suffer considerable losses. The KyrSEFF+ program offers profitable investments to domestic businesses for the modernization of energy-intensive equipment and the installation of modern renewable energy systems, which reduce energy costs and protect the environment. The KyrSEFF+ consultants are ready to assist businesses in finding the most suitable solutions. We believe that with joint efforts we can begin to rationally and efficiently use the existing potential for energy and resource saving in the south of our country, ” said Nurzat Abdyrasulova, the KyrSEFF National Manager.

In summary, at the KyrSEFF+ spring sessions, concrete results and actionable energy saving solutions were presented and discussed with businesses and companies/organizations serving the residential sector.
