Elvira Bakirova’s family celebrated a happy event – the birth of a baby girl – right before the spread of the pandemic. In order to welcome the new family member in a comfortable home, Elvira invested in measures to increase energy efficiency of the family house.

Windows of the house have been upgraded so as to retain more heat. Elvira Bakirova invested in walls and ceilings’ insulation, and installed a highly efficient gas boiler.   “We are very satisfied with the measures taken. We have spent the first winter in the renovated house with comfort. Ensuring that the house is warm and dry was important for us, because we had been awaiting the birth of a child,” says Elvira. Before, expenses for heating were large, although the walls of the house still remained wet. After installing a thermostat, heating costs decreased by more than half.

Despite the economic difficulties that the pandemic caused to her family business, Elvira Bakirova is optimistic about the future. She plans to build a vestibule to expand the house, and to install an efficient air conditioning system, and solar collectors. “I am thankful to KyrSEFF for the grant support. Moreover, the cost savings are very helpful during the time of the pandemic,” remarked Elvira.

The Kyrgyzstan Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (KyrSEFF) was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and established in 2013, with a total portfolio of US$ 55 million. To reward the successful implementation of energy saving measures through KyrSEFF, beneficiaries receive grants ranging from 10 to 35% from the total investment, and free technical support financed by the European Union (EC-IFCA).
